Blacky Ranchette is the alter ego of Howe Gelb, leader of Giant Sand. He formed the Band of Blacky Ranchette in the mid-'80s as a way to explore straight country music.
They released four albums: The eponymous debut album was released in 1985, followed by "Heartland" in 1986. Four years later, the group released its third effort "Sage Advice" in 1990. After a longer hiatus, the fourth and final album "Still Lookin' Good to Me" followed in 2003.
