Jazz trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn player. Shaw was also a composer and leader. He is sometimes referred to as the "last innovator" on the trumpet, playing free jazz and hard bop influenced by modal jazz. Shaw had a troubled relationship with heroin, and, according to sources used by SHS, he contracted AIDS from an infected needle at some point in the early 1980s, although the Estate of Woody Shaw denies that the trumpeter had AIDS. In 1989, Shaw fell in the path of a subway train in Brooklyn, losing his left arm. Shaw died from complications relating to the fall and his overall medical condition.
