Haymes was a singer and actor born in Argentina to British parents who owned a cattle ranch there. Upon his parents' separation, Haymes went with his mother to live in Paris, who was financially crippled by the depression, at which time she moved to the United States with Haymes.

Haymes died of lung cancer.
