Founded as the first west coast–based record label of note in the US in 1942 by Johnny Mercer, Buddy DeSylva, and Glenn E. Wallichs. The label's circular headquarters building is a recognized landmark of Hollywood, California.
In 1956, EMI bought Capitol Records and established it as one of their main labels. Upon EMI's being split in 2012, Vivendi (the French owner of Universal Music), bought the Capitol Records part and integrated it into Universal.
