You have entered the murky world of recording history and I share your frustrations. Unfortunately, not all labels...big and small...kept archival information on artists, recording dates, etc. It leaves enthusiasts like most of Second Hand Songs users maddingly playing detective to find this kind of info. Sometimes starting with the label's catalogue number for a particular release can be the first step in sorting out release dates, but not always. I use on-line sources and a library of reference books on rock music (and some other genres) I have collected over the years. Yet even with these, sometime the only thing I can resolve is the year something was released. I am not looking for the actual day, but I am fanatical about the MONTH as well as the year. I is my fondest desire that people like us could start some kind of clearinghouse of accurate info on artists' recordings including year and month, label, catalogue number and chart activity if any. This would include single releases and album releases. Anyway, I've gone on too long here. Good luck with search...if I find anything, I'll pass it you way.

Some new info for ya Denis:

There is a site about the band Rhinoceros that recorded for Elektra in the late 60s. It has a discography of their work and all work related to the musicians that passed through the band. An individual named Peter Hodgson (don't know what instrument he played) is listed as having been in the David Clayton-Thomas Combine and recorded a single with them called Mind Painting Time Machine backed with Spinning Wheel. The label is listed as Yorkville (with a ? so the author of the site is questioning this fact) and a release date of 1967! This puts it earlier than February 68, but unquestionably way before BS&T's version. Here is the link to the site: http://www.rhinoceros-group.com/discog.htm

I'm will continue to dig into this and forward anything else I can find to ya. At least we have a label(?) to go with.

OK...here is more news on Spinning Wheel. According to a link about Canadian bands, the David Clayton-Thomas Combine did record 2 singles for Yorkville records prior to the spring of 1968. Unfortunately, the site doesn't give a release date for the singles. Here is the link:

Very interesting, but still no visual proof... let alone a sound sample?

Quote: "I surmised it's Yorkville label # 45014 as it is one of the few unknown titles on the label. Yorkville 45014 from what i can tell from 45016 was issued around August or Sept. 67. Also the name of the band to be precise is David Clayton Thomas Combine for this single."

Spinning Wheel

We currently have this as a Blood, Sweat & Tears original. According to for instance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Clayton-Thomas , the David Clayton-Thomas Combine recorded this first, possibly in or around February 1968 (as suggested by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luke_&_The_Apostles)

What I can't find right away:

  • Proof that it was recorded : NL CBS 4220, June 1969 for the 7" single (CAN #1, NL #23, US #2)
  • Release information if there is any: B-side of More and more - both from the LP Blood, Sweat & Tears, NL S 63504, issued in January 1969. US chart #1 (from March) for 7 weeks and sells over 2 million copies by the end of the year, while laying the ground rules for most of the 70s rock/jazz fusion boom. ;-)
