How can we add photos to SHS artist profiles?

I notice that many of the artist pages do not have actual photos of the individual artists or groups.

A good example is Joe McElderry page for example

Joe McElderry

Is there a way to do this now? Will uploading photos be available to editors or can this be allowed for general contributors?

Most importantly are there copyright issues for low resolution photos? I am not sure about this.

Of course we would be equally content to be able to suggest photos and established editors do the job.

Regarding Joe McElderry I mentioned, this would be a good opportunity to suggest some photos for possible inclusion on his artist page

Joe McElderry

Two very typical photos of Joe McElderry would be

Any of the two could be picked or possibly something else.

I added the picture to the artist's page for you, along with some additional information. Had I noticed you were a trainee before doing it, might well have left it to you for when you become an editor. Tim

I thank you for the addition. Greatly appreciated.

But the main question remains for general editors. Are adding photo for now proviledges for the administrators and the main editors or is there a way to add them ourselves rather than via threads on the forum?

The idea to allow more open submission of artist photos is under discussion.

Copyright/rights issues are present no matter the resolution. We mostly rely on uncredited or publicity photos. They should not carry direct credits. There is no guarantee that users will adhere to that. There is often no guarantee that editors are not using a "stolen" photo, either, for that matter.

Further, there is no staff here dedicated to checking photos, either for quality or content. There is no staff here to settle disputes over which picture is best.

IMO, if there's no info about the artist either, the photo is pretty useless. That's been proven to me time and time again when I have an artist XXX and there is another artist XXX already in the database but with no information/data. Is it the same person? More research on my part then is needed, and many times the answer is indeterminate. Other editors think having pictures alone is cool.

I'm ok with members uploading pictures. The thing I wonder is how many members would be using it. It's not as *fun* as picking Youtube videos. I'll make a poll on Facebook.

Are you guys linked to SecondHandSongs Facebook page by the way?

I think uploading photos is as much fun as uploading music videos actually.

And you know the expression, "a picture is worth a thousand words".

I firmly believe that photo of an artist or a group enhances their appeal and is a great addition to the information. It is also a thrill to give a representative but also a quality photo of the artist on his/her page. It is like a tribute to them actually. That's why I would prefer photos at their prime success rather than a recent photo... I just also love the old photos of the singers and groups from the fifties and sixties as they have this great esthetic value to them.

Currently we have no guidelines for picture exactly to upload, but it's an interesting discussion.

Why at their prime success? Why not at the peak of their success?

At "peak" of their success would be ideal provided it is a very common "iconic" and immediately recognizable photo.

Incidentally, I thought "prime" meant at top of one's performance actually (based on "prime time" on radio and television, meaning top listening and viewing time...) But I may be mistaken... Does "prime" mean beginning of their careers? I didn't know that. In any case, I mean picture from their best-known period.

And contrary to some opinions, many of the faces, of even renowned artists, are not known by the new generations anyhow. The generations of the 2000s would hardly know, in general, the pictures of the artists we assume are well-known from the sixties, seventies, eighties and even the nineties... let alone songwriters and lesser known artists who remain unknown in general.

Good. I'm making a little thread in the guidelines board about this. Another good input, thanks Smile

As a member I would love to have the opportunity to upload photo's of the artists in the database.

For example this great photo of Billy Stewart ( www.secondhandsongs.com/artist/2480 ) (See attachment).

I wouldn't worry about the copyrights too much. Other respectable sites who use artist photo's, such as for example www.discogs.com, do not seem to worry.

They use the following standard statement: "All images are copyrighted by their respective copyright owners". That should do.

It could also be wise to institute a so called take down policy regarding copyrighted pictures. Copyright holders can then send a e-mail to SHS which should comply with certain rules. See f.e. the YouTube site for such a notice:

www.youtube.com/t/dmca_policy

Looking forward to all artist photo's,

Limbabwe

Ok, I'll see what we can do on the very short term.

Until now, in these 8 years, we never had any complaint about the use of a copyrighted picture.

Looking forward to all artist photo's,

Creating a new user level that can upload artist photos is now on the programmers ToDo list. The speed of implementation now depends on the workload of the programmers. Hopefully very soon Smile
