Traditional English folk song. The earliest known fragments can be found in Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher's play "The Knight of the Burning Pestle" (1611). The song is in the Percy Folio and is Child Ballad no. 74. It also has a strong Appalachian heritage: it's recorded in Cecil Sharp and Maud Karpeles, 'English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians' (no. 20).
