I was curious as to whether you have to actually get permission to record a cover song, or can you do it whenever you want as long as you give credit to the singer/songwriter?
You can record it anyhow, but when you want to release it (say spread it in a way) you need to pay a certain sum of royalties to the original songwriters + you'll need to mention the original authors in most cases.
