Single Girl

It's not clear to me why the Kossoy Sisters' version of "Single Girl" is not grouped with the Carter Family version. The lyrics and melody appear almost identical and even Erik Darling's guitar style seems to be influenced by Maybelle Carter's method of playing.

I've got you covered.

Feel free to change it if you want. I generally object to pretending that traditional songs are the work of some particular artist who clearly did not write the work.

I agree. However, with Carter's songs we must be extra careful: AP copyrighted every song they recorded, and he "modified" some of them (extra lyrics, different tempo, etc.) He probably even wrote (or re-wrote) some of them from scratch.

Will the Circle Be Unbroken? is exemplary: the song was already very well-known before the Carters recorded it, yet their version has become a classic on its own. And he did make some alteration to the original, both lyrically and musically.

We should probably check every Carter Family song in the database and compare it with this: http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=117018&messages=28

I agree that A. P. Carter has received credit for songs that should be considered traditional. However, my main point, regardless of whether it is credited to Carter or traditional, was that the Kossoy Sisters version should be grouped with the Carter Family version.

Done.

The Kossoy Sisters version was the only one listed as traditional. Consequently, we have have the Carter version as an adaptation of a traditional song but no "traditional" performances.

I don't think that's a problem.

We know that:

1) The song "existed" before the Carter Family covered it.

2) AP Carter "adapted" it in some way.

Who knows, maybe there is (will be) a cover of the traditional version.
