Remarks : According to Wikipedia, supported by Discogs data, this group recorded the song almost 10 years before Tina's hit, thought they never released it until the reissue of this album, Are you ready. (Does that count as an "original" making Tina's a cover?)

Wikipedia: "The song was originally recorded by UK pop group Bucks Fizz, whose version remained unreleased until 2000. [3]

Yes, my question is still-- does a song count as the original if it is recorded but not released? As this one was 10 years before Tina's?? Or is the "original" the first release?

Thanks

Next to stage & film performances - which are handled somewhat differently - the "original" is the first recorded version, regardless when it was released. In this case, Tina had the original for 16 years (1984-2000), untill the "older" Bucks Fizz version was released officially in 2000.

So, in effect, Tina's was a cover? Even though the "original" was released several years later? You do realize that, THAT really does not make sense-- to the general public?

It's a bit odd, yes. But the song is British to begin with, so it's not that hard to understand a British act cut it first. Luckily, not many songs in general have these unusual beginnings Smile

My error: It was not 10 years earlier, but only several months. The group recorded it February 1984 and Tina's was June 4, 1984. Perhaps this could be added parenthetically next to the 2000 (recorded Feb 1984) since Tina's is listed, for clarification??

Actually, the database is structured to permit a different "First Recording" and "First Release". The entry for this work now reflects that the Buck Fizz version was recorded first and the Turner version released first.
