This Can't Be Love

The SHS database currently shows This Can't Be Love by Sonny Stitt was released in 1953 on the single Prestige 831. However, this performance was also included on the LP, Mr. Saxophone , which was released in 1951.

I'm not saying that the database shouldn't show the first release of "This Can't Be Love" by Stitt on "Mr. Saxophone", but I'm just not sure. Both of your references in the Editor's Notes show that this LP has six tracks, not including "This Can't Be Love". On the other hand, the cover art you show for "Mr. Saxophone" definitely shows "This Can't Be Love" on the LP. I checked "The Jazz Discography" by Lord, which shows that the same version of "This Can't Be Love" was released on both the LP "Mr Saxophone" and as a single. This leads to the issue of which version was actually released first. Your 1951 release date comes from Rate Your Music, and may be right, but I haven't been able to confirm it. For instance, the bsnpubs draft of the Prestige label, which shows "This Can't Be Love" as on the LP, just gives the release date as "195?". See, http://www.bsnpubs.com/new/prestige.pdf . Similarly, my 1953 release date for the single is actually inferred from the fact that some Prestige singles with catalog numbers lower than 831 were not recorded until late-December, 1952. See, http://www.78discography.com/Prestige.htm . It seemed to me unlikely that, for instance, Prestige single 828 was released in 1953, but single 831 was released in 1951, although this could have occurred. Also possible, but I think unlikely, the LP was reissued at some point with two additional tracks.

So, if Lord is correct, we are talking about releases of the identical performance. At this point, I'm not 100% satisfied with the release dates that we are showing for either the LP or the single. Thus, for now, I'm not changing anything.

Tim,

Thanks for your reply.

I have additional evidence that the LP, Mr. Saxophone , was released before 1953.

Birkajazz provides some details on the early history of the Prestige label and gives release dates for some of the 10 inch LPs. In particular that site shows Prestige PRLP 108 (Lee Konitz and Stan Getz) was released in 1951 and Prestige PRLP 124 (Miles Davis) was released in 1952. Prestige PRLP 140 (Miles Davis) also shows a 1952 release date. These data are consistent with a 1951 release date for PRLP 111.

I'll let you know if I find stronger evidence for the release date.

For what it's worth, the Goldmine Jazz Album Price Guide says 1951 for PRLP 111.

All the results for this album in popsike.com seem to have eight tracks. But jazzdisco.org does seem firmly convinced otherwise: the other two tracks at http://www.jazzdisco.org/prestige-records/discography-1951-1952/#510201 are not linked to PRLP 111 at all.

Hey Murray: I'll change it based on Birkajazz.
