On "All Tomorrow's Parties" (Cleopatra ‎– CLP 2055) by Nicon, there are versions of the song "Al Tomorrow's Parties" (written by Lou Reed - original by The Velvet Underground and Nico). Is this a cover?

If they're different from the 1967 version (re-recordings) and the Velvet Underground are not involved, then they are covers.

For instance, Nico covered I'm Waiting for the Man

Sorry, if this is or isn't an open thread, I just joined the forum...

Even if Nico was the singer on the original version, because the backing band was different, it would be considered a cover? At sometimes I could understand it, like David Lee Roth doing a fifties style version of a Van Halen song, but others not. Are there any fast rules on this?

Sorry again, thought of a better one:

Motorhead by Motorhead versus the original Motorhead by Hawkwind.

So the author of the song performed in both, but the original by Hawkwind has a different singer.

Yes. Generally speaking: different version (recording) + different artist (name) = cover.

If Paul & Ringo covered "I Want to Hold Your Hand", that would be a "legitimate" cover for us.

The version of "Summertime" included in http://www.discogs.com/Janis-Joplin-Anthology/master/315520 is not a cover, because it's the same as Summertime

Glad I found this forum, this is awesome.

Sorry, for hopefully the last time, for not reading through the FAQ and Introduction first before posting. Thanks for your graciousness and patience.

I saw Stiff Little Fingers with Bruce Foxton on bass and they introduced Smithers Jones as a Jam cover - even though Bruce wrote it and played on the original.
