Can't find the original performer. I do know it's written by Mann & Weil, and there are versions by Elvis and BJ Thomas.

According to coverinfo.de it is indeed Barry Mann (1968).  However I haven't found any evidence that confirms this.

Another Source:

"Schon kurz nach dem Erscheinen des Originals, das von Co-Autor Barry Mann 1968 selbst gesungen wurde, avancierte ,I Just Can?t Help Believing' zu einem häufig interpretierten Lied, von Bobby Vee bis hin zu Wayne Newton."

I have also read that source JS, but I'm not sure if I can trust it because:

1) There are a lot of mistakes on the Helmut Lotti site

2) I can't find the song by Barry Mann

No, according to the Originals it's Barry Mann in 1968, released on Capitol. Co-author's full name is Cynthia Weil.

Thanks for the offer Ron, but I'm 100% sure Barry Mann recorded a version in 1968. The question was whether this one was the first version of the song.

Actually the first recording was on Capitol records by a group called New Tradition from Albert Lea , MN. It was produced by Barry Mann and Written by him. This group also was the first to record Leaving on a Jet Plane by John Denver, and after they sold aprox. 10,000 copies, the Studio had Peter, Paul and Mary re-record it and it became a hit. - Only known copies left are in a archive at UNC - Southern Folklife Collection. Hope this helps Smile

I was a member of "The New Tradition" that recorded a cover of "I Just Can't Help Believin'" as mentioned here. It was the "B" side. "A" side was "Leavin' On A Jet Plane"

Capitol 2589 released in August, 1969.
