I'm Gonna Get Along Without You

Hogsed recorded this on June 19, 1951.

On the Capitol label, it is credited to Roy Hogsed and Rex May.

Although it's essentially the same song, the lyrics differ seriously. For me, it is clear, Milton Kellem, who shows up as writer from Brewer's recording onwards, sweetened up the lyrics (boom, boom, etc), omitting lines like "can't stand a lyin' woman and a sneakin' man" from the original.

Shouldn't Brewer's version be added as an adaptation from Hogsed's instead of a straight cover?

Okay, I changed everything around to reflect this.

I'm Gonna Get Along Without You

While the melodies sound very close to me, as well as much of the lyrics, that doesn't count for anything at SHS. Such linkages have been protested before because they could not be proven absolutely.

Note that the SHS-recognized sources like GEMA and BMI do not include Hogsed and Mays credits in any Kellem versions. Therefore, for some editors, in database terms, Hogsed's performance is not connected at all. The rights could have been sold off, sure, or the songs could have been judged different enough to allow different credits. The song could have been "borrowed" from Kellem. I don't know any of that, however. By any chance, do you?

This seems to parallel Hank Thompson's "The Wild Side of Life" and the answer song "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels". Melodies are close enough to be the same, yet there are completely different writing credits for each. Plus there is no authority saying there is common linkage. BTW neither is in the database because of the crediting problem.

Big thanks. This is what I had in mind.

"that doesn't count for anything at SHS. Such linkages have been protested before because they could not be proven absolutely"

I do regret this, we all have ears don't we. Like a "credit" is absolutely, there has been notorious miscrediting in the past, e.g. Stormy Monday.

My guess here is Hogsed's song was bought off, as I haven't seen any claim from his part.

But I know you don't like guesses :-)

Wild Side of Life is a bit different, the melody is traditional, it can be heard in older songs like (I'm Thinking Tonight Of My) Blue Eyes ('27) and The Great Speckled Bird ('36). So, in my opinion there is NO crediting issue at all. New set of lyrics = new song, as simple as that.

Offhand, do you have any idea of what the traditional tune is called?

If you have "some authority" make the connection, it will stand up as proof. Sheet music comparison would work IMO, but often doesn't work well for traditionals. There are problems with quite a few of the blues songs in the database, for example. There are also some A.P. Carter songs that may need to be made "Traditional". But there is not often agreement among the experts sometimes. It would help to have Daniel back to work on those. If you want to work on them, they will probably still be there when you are allowed to do corrections.

On the tune, I have no idea, but I never did a thorough search there. I may get to it all in the future. Thanks.
