What is a credit?

A credit refers to an acknowledgement of those who contributed to a song. An artist can be credited as a composer of a song (writing the music), as an author of a song (writing the lyrics), or both.

Example: George Gershwin gets credit for writing the music to Embraceable You.
Example: Ira Gershwin gets credit for writing the lyrics to Embraceable You.
Example: John Lennon and Paul McCartney both get credits for writing the music and lyrics to Eleanor Rigby.

Songwriting credits should always be attributed to single artists, never to bands.

Wrong Example: Light My Fire, music and lyrics by The Doors
Correct Example: Light My Fire, music and lyrics by James Douglas Morrison, John Paul Densmore, Raymond Manzarek, Robert Krieger

Erroneous credits

Sometimes songs are credited to the wrong person. Think for example of artists crediting their wife. In those cases the credits should be changed in our database. Note that the comment of the song should explain why the credits in our database are different from the official credits.

Example: No Woman, No Cry by Bob Marley & the Wailers was written by Bob Marley, but officially credited to Vince Ford.
