Grebinka's poem, titled Чёрные oчи (Ochi chërnye = Black or Dark Eyes), was written about 1843 and published in the St. Petersburg literary gazette. The poem was then coupled with Hermann's music adapted by Sofus Gerdal. The song has often been erroneously described and credited as a traditional Romany tune.
