- Lawrence Brown, Duke Ellington's trombonist, claims he wrote the melody and Otto Hardwick, the saxophonist, wrote the bridge. The story goes that Duke Ellington paid them $15 apiece for all their rights to the song, after which they disappeared from the credits.
