Both the Myers and Redmond versions of this work entered the "Billboard" charts in October, 1902. The Myers recording reached number 1 and stayed on the charts for 12 weeks. Redmond's version reached number 3 and stayed on the charts for five weeks. We have not been able to determine which was recorded or released first.
Many sources say that this song was introduced by Blanche Ring in the musical comedy "The Defender", which opened on July 3, 1902. In fact, the song had already been sung on vaudeville stages prior to its use in "The Defender".
