A poem, "A Pub With No Beer", was written by Dan Sheahan in 1943 and it was published in the "Queensland Register" in 1944. The lyrics by Parsons are different but he was clearly influenced directly or indirectly by Sheahan's poem.

Also, several people have commented on the similarity between the melodies of "Pub With No Beer" and Stephen Fosters'"Beautiful Dreamer."
