According to Armenian-American jazz pianist and cigar manufacturer Avo Uvezian, he is the original composer of the music. To publish the song in Europe and secure the royalties, he had sent it to Bert Kaempfert, but apparently Bert Kaempfert took the writing credits.

Avo Uvezian arranged a meeting with Frank Sinatra in Palm Springs to present the song to Sinatra, originally titled "Broken Guitar". Sinatra loved the melody, but had the lyrics rewritten to "Strangers in the Night". However, by that time Bert Kaempfert had already introduced the melody as an instrumental in the movie A Man Could Get Killed.
