Song: New Britain

Music written by:traditional
Lyrics written by:John Newton
Originally written by:traditional
Publication date:1835
Language:English
Adapted from:
New Britain written by traditional
Comments:The song was first found integrated with lyrics from John Newton's "Hymn XLI" from "Olney Hymns" (1779) in William Walker's songbook "Southern Harmonies". This is the version popularized in the twentieth century.

Newton's "Hymn XLI" is text only, and many other tunes were used for its music, even through modern times. As "New Britain" is only known from 1829, it is quite doubtful it was ever used as the original tune for "Hymn XLI".
