Alternative title: "Time's Getting Tougher".
As there are various official registrations crediting Jimmy Witherspoon for this work, there is some uncertainty regarding its original author(s). It s a great example for a 'poverty blues', though:
The lyrics:
"Money's getting cheaper, prices getting steeper,
Found myself a woman, but I couldn't keep her."
Chorus;
"Well, times getting tougher than tough,
Yes, things getting rougher than rough,
Well, I make a lot of money, but I just keep spending the stuff."
"Pork chops on the market, asked the butcher for a pound,
Couldn't buy a pork chop when I laid my money down."
(Chorus)
"Politicians tellin' folks, to cut down on their meat,
Why don't they cut down on the prices and let the people eat?"
(Chorus)
"I can't afford to live, but I guess I'll have to try,
The undertakers got a union and it costs too much to die"
(Chorus). - Licensing
