Alternative label founded by Daniel Miller. With the success of Depeche Mode, Erasure, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Moby etc., Mute became a so called 'Major Independent'.
In 2002, EMI bought Mute Records but kept Miller running the label. When EMI was mainly split between Universal Music and WEA in 2012, Miller wanted to buy back the rights in the label's catalogue, but was defeated by BMG Rights Management.
As of 2011, the Mute label itself continues to operate under the roof of the Daniel Miller owned company Mute Artists Ltd. Releases are these days handled by PIAS in most parts of the world. - Related labels
