I was wondering what the catalog numbers on the sleeve of an album mean. I know most 'small' labels have their own numbering system, but larger labels mostly have catalog numbers in the following format:

QQQQ R SSSSS T U (ie 7243 4 92960 9 1)

I'm guessing the QQQQ and R numbers don't have much to do with the label, because they can be the same for different labels.

For the QQQQ there are lots of cd's with 7243. Maybe this has something to do with the country it was released in, I don't know..

The R is 8 most of the time, but again I don't know the meaning.

The SSSSS is probably the catalog number of that specific label, because that number is always different.

I really don't know about the T...

...and the U could be a validation number, but I'm still guessing.

I did some research on the net but found nothing interesting. Does anyone here know this?
