The origins of this tune date back centuries (although, of course, we can't be sure about the precise melody until the advent of sheet music, or even recordings, and like all traditional songs melodic and lyrical variations are common). The song has been known by several names, including "College Hornpipe," "Jack's the Lad," and "Lancashire Hornpipe." The title "Sailor's Hornpipe" became popular as the tune became associated with sailors by about the 17th century. A "hornpipe" was originally a musical instrument, and later became the name of a folk dance resembling a jig or a reel.
